Why does my dad make loud snoring noises sporadically when he is awake?

My dad is diabetic, has high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, and has been hospitalized for two strokes. Lately, when I got to visit him, he breaths heavily- while awake- and then produces a loud snoring sound that cause some of his body to tremble as well. It sounds just like a snore but he is not asleep.

      For it occasionally will suddenly take deep breath with snore coming as an effect of my deep breath maybe he is catching his breath maybe he is catching his breath with snore coming as an effect of my deep breath with snore coming as an effect of my deep breath shallow breather do.
      The past used to breath shallow breather do this too sometimes because in the past used to breath shallow and am still paying for it.
