How can I stop my snoring?

I keep snoring and my girlfriend absolutely hates it. She tells me that she has to nudge me every 5 minutes to shut me up, I’ve tried nasal strips that don’t work. Any suggestions?

If you have any breathing difficulties then you will surely have snoring problem. You can use nasal strips, sprays, drops and other devices to clear nasal passage. This will stop snoring. Nasal strips are less expensive and it has no drugs. SO it is safe and it will help your nose to keep open and breathe easily. So when talking about snoring problems and conditions that result from it, you see that the list is, no pun intended, exhaustive.

How does one address snoring problems and conditions that result from it? To simply say that you need a good night’s sleep is very simplistic. If it were that easy, everyone would be able to do it. When dealing with snoring problems and conditions suffered, you must get to the root of your snoring (or the snoring of your bedmate) and then address that first, before you can address the resultant conditions.

Getting to the Root of Snoring

Many people assume that snoring is just because your mouth falls open at night, and that it’s a part of life. This may be true to a certain extent. However, when getting to the root of snoring problems and conditions of poor health associated with it, you must examine the issue a bit deeper.

Usually snoring is caused by problems with the soft palate, which is the area at the back of the mouth. When air passes over this area during breathing, it causes the membranes to vibrate, making the sound we call snoring. Collapsing sinuses can also cause snoring, as there is not much room in the nasal passages for air to pass through. There are also other causes of snoring, such as blocked airways, irritants or pollutants in the area, dry throat, and many others.

The Most Dangerous Snoring Problem and Condition

Chances are that sleep apnea is the most dangerous snoring problem and condition. Sleep apnea refers to a cessation of breathing during sleep, and which causes the person to wake up, even momentarily, to restore breathing. Very often the sufferer doesn’t know that he or she has this condition and is often unaware of the fact that they are waking up at all.

Sleep apnea is considered the most dangerous of snoring problems and conditions because this lack of oxygen during sleep can actually cause slight brain damage - not enough to put someone in a mental ward or anything so drastic, but enough to cause problems for him or her throughout the rest of the day. If undiagnosed and untreated, sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disease, impotency, memory problems, headaches, weight gain, falling asleep at inappropriate times such as while driving or at one’s place of employment, as well as work impairment and accidents due to fatigue.

Experts have found that children with untreated sleep apnea may be hyperactive. Additionally, some persons with severe cases of sleep apnea have even died in their sleep from this disease, although this is more typically common in severely obese persons. So, you see why sleep apnea is rightly called the most dangerous of snoring problems and conditions, as it’s not just dangerous, it’s downright deadly.

Sleep apnea is most often seen in obese persons, because this extra body weight puts undue pressure on the airways and the neck, cutting them off during sleep. Snoring problems and conditions are often experienced by those who are overweight because of this same issue. However, those that are overweight and who have a tendency to snore should speak with their doctor immediately, especially if their snoring has choking or gasping sounds to it. They should be immediately tested for sleep apnea.

Snoring problems and conditions caused by it should not be ignored. Not only does the snorer himself or herself suffer from these health problems, but so can the person in the bed next to him or her. It’s even been reported that excessive snoring has caused huge rifts in marriages, as one partner may notice it while the other one doesn’t, and a lack of sleep in one person can of course take its toll on both. So, add marriage problems to the list of snoring problems and conditions suffered because of it!

Treatment is Available

The good news is that there are many treatment options available for those who are snorers, even if they are chronically so. Snoring problems and conditions resulting from it do not need to be suffered indefinitely. There are pills, sprays, mouth guards, nose strips, snore pillows, and many other options that your doctor can recommend to help with this problem.

There are also many home remedies that you can do yourself, such as putting a humidifier in your bedroom to make sure that your throat is adequately moist, putting a pillow under your back and one hip to keep you on your side, smoking cessation, refraining from alcohol, and many other options that your doctor can share with you.

We heard in the news this past month about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes and about how they sleep in separate bedrooms because of Tom’s snoring problem. We also got to hear about Barack Obama the 2008 presidential candidate and his problem at home with snoring.

For the first time snoring has finally made it into the major news, I hear more and more about it everyday. New homebuilders are getting requests for double master suites, the obesity rates in the U.S. are climbing, and our figureheads are snoring. We as a society need to realize that snoring is not just the punch line of a joke or cartoon anymore. Snoring has become an epidemic that is attacking our society and family lives. It affects over 25% of the world’s population and yet research into stopping snoring is nowhere to be found.

What are our options now to stop snoring; Archaic surgery that mounts a screw into your jaw bone and connects it through your tongue, weird chin straps that wrap around your head to keep your mouth closed, bulky gas mask looking devices that use a oxygen tank, and heavy wrist watch things that actually electrocute you while your sleeping. With options like these it’s surprising that someone hasn’t recommended we bleed our selves with leeches.

What we need is to educate our selves and the public with real ways to stop snoring. Things as simple as being over weight, alcohol consumption before bed, and an unhealthy diet can cause snoring. If you really want to permanently stop snoring your best solution is a life style change.

I wont tell you that you need to drink 8 glasses of water a day or eat 9 fruits a day. The people that come up with these things are out of their minds. Make it easy on your self; you know what’s horrible for your body and what’s not. Instead of the triple cheeseburger have a salad. Start to exercise regularly get a gym member ship or just walk around the block a few times. I am by no means a health nut and I hardly follow these guide lines my self but if you really want to stop snoring then you need to hunker down and do things right. We have all heard stories of marriages ending and families having problems due to snoring. Do you really want you marriage to be ruined just because you couldn’t diet and exercise?

Of course this approach is hardly instant, to help you along the way to stop snoring for good you might want to try a few things.

- Sleep on your side: sleeping on your side helps keep your breathing passage open and helps stop snoring.

- Do not drink alcohol before bed: If your throat is dry your chances of snoring are far greater. “Dry Mouth” is caused by the alcohol evaporating leaving your throat dry making you more liable to snore. If you must drink or just want to, have a glass of water before bed it will help.

- You can also use a product designed to help stop snoring. Products are abundant and come in all shapes in sizes. I want to personally recommend a product called SnorEnz. It’s an easy to use spray and best of all its alcohol free. You need to avoid products that have alcohol in them! Make sure to check the labels.

If you stay on course and diet and exercise you WILL stop snoring for good. Only 25% of people snore, there is a reason why the other 75% are sore free. Its time you made a change in your life. Don’t expect someone to come up with some wonder cure for you. You can stop snoring, stop wasting your money on worthless products and gimmicks. In one month you could be snore free.

I don’t sleep that much, but when I’m awake I hear his snoring and it pisses me off. I want to take a baseball bat to his loft and wake him up, but I don’t want to break his bed [i’m really not that angry].
So what do I do [other than leave the room]?
Like it’s ok when people snore, but his snoring is ridiculous, it almost sounds unhealthy.
