My husband has a horrible snoring problem. It is to the point where I don’t sleep so have to go in a different room at night. I don’t want to have to do this but have our two small children to care for during the day so I have to get some rest. I believe it affects his quality of sleep too as he seems restless during the night. Is there anything out there that has worked for any of you? He has mentioned surgery but I am hoping it doesn’t have to go that far. Please help!

Carl Ringwall asked:

Anyone afflicted by snoring, or a spouse that snores, has certainly looked into ways to solve the problem.  There are pillows on the market that target this very problem.  Snore no more pillows are one of the options out there for people who snore.  For some, snoring is caused by poor sleeping positions that restrict the airways.  These pillows that are available for purchase are specially designed to deal with this cause.

During sleep the jaw can fall backward, restricting the airway.  This means all the air that you breathe in is being forced through a very small opening.  The force of the air through this small opening causes vibrations in the throat tissue.  Snoring is the result of these vibrations.

Keeping the jaw forward while asleep may help reduce, if not altogether stop, your snoring.  A snore no more pillow is made of a form-holding foam that helps you sleep in the right position.  The contours of the pillow keep the jaw forward and the chin raised away from the chest, both of which help to open the airway.  The more room air has to pass into the lungs, the fewer vibrations are made which means less snoring.

If a special pillow doesn’t completely solve your snoring problem, then using it in conjunction with another snoring remedy may be the answer to your problem.  Other factors that can contribute to the problem of snoring are poor diet, lack of exercise, being overweight, and alcohol consumption. Eating properly, exercising regularly, and possibly losing a little weight may help ease snoring.  Alcohol consumption can lead to the throat muscles relaxing, which restricts the airway and causes the vibrations. Avoiding alcohol before bed can help you avoid some of the circumstances that lead to snoring.  Combining these strategies with a snore no more pillow may stop your snoring entirely.

If you find that the anti-snore pillow reduces but does not eliminate your snoring, and you sleep on your back, try sleeping on your side.  Another strategy to use in conjunction with your snoring pillow is to raise the head of the bed about 4 inches.  This may help open the airways through proper body position which can further reduce, if not completely eliminate, snoring.

What causes snoring and how can it be stopped?

Amanda asked:

My boyfriend recently started snoring a lot. It seems like it only happened when he sleeps on his back, but its getting to the point to where he keeps me up at night. I’m wondering what causes snoring. I would also like to know if anyone has any home remedies that might reduce it (and if you don’t, just let me know what medications, nose strips, etc worked for you).

Don Levy asked:

Snoring is the noise caused by parts of your throat vibrating as you breath. Snoring only happens while you are sleeping because this is when the muscles are most relaxed. When the muscles are relaxed the components in your throat drop down to block the normal airflow through the passage which has been narrowed. The air moving through this narrowed passage is what causes the snoring.

Remedies for snoring are often very apparent. Other times they require extensive studies on factors that are related and can either aggravate the problem or cause the condition. Some of the more common causes along with simple ways to cure them are listed below.

1. Overweight-Its well known that many people in the United States are overweight due to not exercising enough, eating too much or a combination of both. Its common knowledge that that overweight people are more apt to snore than ones that are slimmer. The primary cause of their snoring is because their throats are fleshier and therefore have more blockages that can narrow the air passages. The simple way for an overweight person to cut down on their excessive snoring is to lose some weight.

2. Alcohol-Drinking alcohol relaxes the throat muscles which as we learned will be the immediate problem of excessive snoring. By eliminating any alcoholic beverages just before bedtime you can avoid many of the problems associated with the snoring.

3. Smoking-There are many reasons not to smoke and among them are the modification to your throat. Over time mucous will build up in the throat to ease the smoke and nicotine passing through it and reduce inflammation. A larger than normal amount of mucous can be released which will cause the small blood vessels in the lungs to swell along with the throat. When this happens the air ways are again being blocked causing the increased snoring. Sleep apnea is also a problem caused by these blockages and can cause breathing interruptions. These interruptions are caused by irregular breathing patterns. This results to snoring and poor sleep.

4. Sleep Patterns-Going to bed at the same time and getting 7 or 8 hours of sleep will help keep your snoring in check. When your sleep pattern is interrupted your breathing will become unbalanced which can cause snoring. Noises from your bed partner or other things will also cause unbalanced breathing and snoring. Try to make your sleeping area as quiet as possible. Sometimes soothing sounds or white noises from a recording will help mask other disturbing sounds.

5. Sleeping Positions-Due to gravity pulling on their tongue and throat muscles, people who sleep on their backs usually have more problems with snoring than ones who sleep on their sides. Along with the gravity the throat is in a more restful position, which causes parts of the throat and tongue to drop down and restrict the air flow cause a person to snore.

By sleeping in an elevated position there will be some relief. The recommended amount is about 30 degrees. With this elevation your diaphragm is relaxed and the tongue won’t restrict the air flow through the throat area.

Medical Problems-There are a number of medical conditions that can cause snoring. Allergies for instance can cause swelling or inflammation of the air passage. Adenoids and tonsils are also cause of snoring especially if they are large. Many time a cold or sinus condition will block your nose causing you to breathe through you mouth which can cause you to snore.

If you do experience a block nasal passage you can use a spray to clear it so you won’t be forced to breath through your mouth and probably end up snoring. Nasal strips are another aid that may help you breath through your nose rather than your mouth.

If you still snore after trying these things you may want to explore surgery, depending on how much snoring is affecting your life as well as those around you. Of course I would think of surgery as a last resort but sometimes it is necessary for your health.

For people looking for a snoring cure, there are a huge amount of options out there snoring cure. These types of treatments can range from quite pricey surgical options to simple and relatively cheap over the counter remedies and treatments that are all natural. No matter what your personal circumstances, you should know that there are numerous options available to you when you’re looking for ways to rid yourself of the troublesome snoring condition. In this article we aim to highlight just a few of the numerous cures for snoring that are available today.

Need A Cure For Snoring That Works? : The Humidifier

In some cases, snoring can be caused by an overly dry throat and mouth. A viable cure for snoring in this instance are humidifiers, as they can sometimes cure either a dry mouth and throat that is excessively dry. By providing a more humid than dry atmosphere you can help to lubricate a snorers throat and mouth and as a result eliminate snoring almost completely. Vix vapor rub is a perfect product for mixing with water and adding to your humidifier, generating a stream of anti-congestion air to breathe, excellent for reducing a snorers nasal congestion.

A Viable New Snoring Cure: The Adkins Snoring Aid

The Adkins Snoring Aid is a British invention which reduces the amount of airflow to the snorer and aids in the minimization of snoring. The Adkins Snoring Aid essentially uses two very tiny plastic balls connected to one another with a small clip to plug one’s nostrils. The user is then forced to breathe through their mouth. In some cases breathing through the mouth might possibly be an oxymoron, as breathing through the mouth can cause snoring. However, it is sometimes the case that snoring is caused by vibrations in the back of the nose. A pretty straight forward test you can use to work out if this product is suitable cure for snoring. Try pinching your partner’s nose when they are snoring. Do this for a couple of seconds. If they do stop snoring, then the Adkins Snoring Treatment would be a great product to use. When using this product it is best to drink some water before going to bed as the Adkins Snoring Aid can cause a dry mouth by the morning.

An Excellent Cure For Snoring: Anti-Snoring Pillows

Believe it or not you can get pillows which are specially designed to help you stop snoring. These anti-snoring pillows are often hypoallergenic, meaning the growth of mildew, mold and allergens are prevented thereby minimizing the risk of respiratory infections. An anti-snoring pillow helps the user to position his or her head in a way that prevents the airways from becoming blocked or obstructed. Basically this means it keeps your jaw from slackening and keeps your chin away from your chest. The neck is held in such a position that the jaw is kept forward - a great position to stop the snoring. No matter what position you sleep in, on your side, on your back or on your front. This pillow is a useful cure for snoring if you consider that most people change position some 50 times throughout the night.

Sheila Guilloton asked:

Snoring is a funny problem, in a comedy sketch. But snoring in real life is a difficult and complex problem. Everyone snores at one time or another. Babies snore and they sound very cute. Pets snore and that’s just amusing. But what if your bed partner snores so loudly that you cannot sleep. This is not cute or amusing.

The intimacy of a good marriage can be destroyed by snoring. If one party snores so loudly that it wakes up the other party, that is a problem that must be solved. The non-snoring partner will probably not be able to get back to sleep. If it’s available, they may move to a guest room. But no one really wants to leave their partner and sleep alone. And if this goes on night after night, it can break down an otherwise good relationship.

I remember a widow I knew once told me that after her husband died she would have given anything just to hear him snoring beside her. I try to tell myself that when my husband’s snoring wakes me up. But while I understand her loss and appreciate the sentiment, I cannot help being angry when I can’t get a good night’s sleep.

Snoring is caused by the narrowing of the airways in the nose and throat. As you breathe, the air has to push its way though a smaller then usual passage. The noise you hear is due to the vibration of loose tissue in the back of the throat. Snoring can be mild, meaning that snoring stops when the snorer changes position. Snoring can also be severe and it this case the snoring continues no matter what position the body is in. Chronic and severe snoring can lead to serious health problems.

There are many causes of snoring, some of which are under our control and some of which are not. Causes within our control include being overweight or out of shape. Excess weight and fatty tissue in the neck cause the throat to become smaller. Poor muscle tone can also contribute to snoring. Smoking, even second hand smoke, may play a role as smoking both relaxes muscles and contributes to nasal and lung congestion. Excessive alcohol and certain medications which relax the throat and tongue muscles can contribute to snoring. Finally, sleep position can play a role. Sleeping flat on your back allows the neck to relax too much and creates the proper environment to produce snoring.

There are also factors that we cannot control which contribute to snoring. Heredity is one. You may inherit a narrow throat. Being middle aged or older will also result in the narrowing of the throat and loss of muscle tone. Being male is a factor. Some women do snore, of course, but generally men have narrower air passages and are more likely to snore. Medical conditions such as allergies, asthma or other respiratory problems will cause blockage of the airways and may result in snoring.

Before you can look for a cure you need to understand why you snore. Here’s a little tip to help you. If you snore with you mouth open, your snoring is probably related to the tissues in your throat. If you snore with you mouth closed, a problem with your tongue is probably to blame.

What to do about snoring depends on the cause and severity. Extreme cases can lead to sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a true breathing obstruction which requires the sleeper to wake up to begin breathing again. Often the sleeper does not remember waking up and unless that person has a sleep partner who notices the awakenings the condition may go untreated. Sleep apnea is life threatening and a physician must be consulted if this condition is determined to be the cause of snoring.

In most cases of snoring however, the person can take measures necessary to cure their snoring without resorting to drastic medical fixes. Obviously losing weight, getting in shape and stopping smoking are first on the list of self cures. A snorer may change the position in which they sleep and try elevating their head. If you have a cold you can take a nasal decongestant to help you breathe more easily or try a nasal strip to help keep nasal passages open. Don’t take antihistamines before bed, however, because this will cause the throat muscles to relax.

If none of these help enough, there are certain exercise programs which have been found to be extremely effective in controlling and even curing snoring. Certainly it is a good idea to use an exercise program to cure your snoring because the next step would be to seek medical help and treatments. Unfortunately, these medical solutions are often expensive, uncomfortable and not always effective.

Exercise programs have been effective for the majority of snorers. Why wouldn’t you try to eliminate the underlying cause of your snoring yourself with simple life style changes and exercises before putting yourself through uncomfortable and even painful procedures, which are expensive and not guaranteed? Learn to take care of yourself. Take control of your snoring and make yourself and your sleeping partner happier and healthier.
